Halloween '06 Part 1: Monster Shindig / Schizoid
Monster Shindig was an LP released by Hanna Barbera I believe in 1966. It featured The Gruesomes, The Flintstones' ghastly neighbors. The song "Monster Shindig" was written and recorded by Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night.

And if you like suspense-sex dramas, get Lucio Fulci's Lizard in a Woman's Skin (aka Schizoid, aka Una Lucertola Con La Pelle Di Donna) now!

From an IMDB user: "Florinda Bolkan plays the daughter of a prominent English politician who keeps having recurring "nightmares" in which she makes love to a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies. When the nocturnal wet dreams become murderous, the neighbor turns up dead, and Florinda is the main suspect. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamed about? Is she being framed by her philandering husband? Did Florinda actually make nightly visits downstairs aside from borrowing the occasional cup of sugar? How DID Florinda's letter opener end up stuck in the dead neighbor's chest anyway? The complex plot unfolds amidst red herrings, outlandish dream sequences, lesbian hanky panky, and ominous close-ups of Florinda Bolkan's guilt-ridden facial expressions every time someone mentions the murder. All this takes place in swinging late-1960's London."

I like Lizard a lot more than Fulci's other films. I guess Fulci was really conservative in real life and despised "hippies", which would explain some of the absurd ideas he had about them , and especially LSD. The two "hippies" didn't notice a murder happen right in front of them because they were filled with LSD "from their head to toes." Right, Fulci. And they probably jumped out a window after the movie was over. But the awesome part of him thinking that all hippies are strung-out nymphomaniac murderers, is that it makes great cinema. Anyhow, to top it off, the score by Morricone stellar.

Lizard is finally out? It's been in the release date unknown section of my Netflix queue for ages.

Seems like giallo directors have skewed ideas about drugs in general--doesn't EVIL EYE end with some insane, tacked on ending writing off the entire plot as a reefer-fueled hallucination? I'd smoke pot constantly if it meant having visions of John Saxon on the beach, though.

It looks as if it is out, Amazon has it with a release date of Feb '05. Netflix must be dragging their feet in getting a few copies. Can we harass or shame them them into getting it?

I bet if you would email Netflix, they would get it in. It's probably just a glitch on their part. I mean, they pretty much carry everything that's in print, ya know?

Yup, Lizard came out last year. Disc one is a cleaned-up version where most of the actors are dubbed and disc two is subtitled and it includes the dogs (or coyotes?) scene that was cut out in some (or all?) countries. I have not actually seen Evil Eye yet. I don't think it's been released here and I'm always hesitant to buy bootlegs of these giallos because you never know what version your going to get. I just looked it up again on IMDb and look at this:
"Runtime: 106 min / Italy:89 min (Italian version) / Spain:82 min (Spanish version)"
What's that craziness? 24 minutes cut from a film could totally change everything!

I saw a print of EVIL EYE called The Girl Who Knew too Much on Turner Classics when they did a Bava retrospective a few years ago, but I have no idea which version was aired. I think it was released on DVD, but so many of those really nice Bava DVDs are out of print now. I kept putting off buying Lisa and the Devil and now it's like 56 dollars on Amazon. No thank you!

Thanks for reminding me about Lizard in a Woman's Skin; I have not seen it in years. It scratches the same itch as Daughters of Darkness for me.

Hey, I think we definitely have a pizza date. John is gonna get that night off. Just wait until you try Scotti's!

I think that's so true - conservative yet imaginative film-makers use their ignorance/instinctive dislike/repressed jealousy of those free-loving youths to make completely irresistable films. At one level you get great stuff like this, or at the very least you get Trip To Hashbury, the hilarious episode of Ironside I just watched. He had to contend with many dangerous spaced-out hippies, but they were actually nice kids waiting to be redeemed and returned to polite society by guess-who.

I've never had a chance to see Ironside. I can't think of a time when re-runs of that show have played...
